Who is Joss and why am I doing this?
Joss was a boy at my school who was in a lot of the same classes and sports teams as me. He walked a bit funny and found somethings a bit hard but underneath it all, he was just like the rest of my friends.
In September 2010 we went back to School after the summer holidays and Joss looked a lot more poorly than he had.....he needed a walker and didn't play sport anymore.
In January he had to go into hospital for an operation. I remember School telling us in Assembly that he had done really well and was a lot better. Then, when I got home, Mum sat me down and told me that Joss had died. I was really confused and thought she had got it wrong, I told Mum that school said he was going to be OK...I got quite upset and cried...I didn't understand how he just wouldn't be around anymore. It wasn't until after he died I was told he had a brain tumour..
Why I am doing this ride?.....Because my friend died, and I still miss him...and it's not fair...
Joss's Mum and Dad set up a charity in his name to help other people suffering with brain tumours and you can read all about Joss and the brilliant stuff they do to help at www.jossparkessearchlight.org.uk
Please follow my training progress and also the ride itself and show your support on Twitter @rideforjoss and on Facebook RideForJoss
I am also on Virgin Giving as Max Wellstead - RideForJoss - any donation you can make will make a big difference!
Thanks Max

Day 5 Report - Allez Allez Allez Paris!!
So here we are, last day has arrived and it is sunny again today, 80+ miles but flatter (as we a staying at the top of a hill, I convinced Max it was down hill all the way to Paris!!)
Small amount of GPS confusion in the woods led to an amount of walking across sand and fields but, it was all forgotten when Max beat Froomey to Paris in yellow with over 400 miles in his legs...
Well done boys you have been brilliant! I am so pleased all 8 legs made it to Paris!!!
The Stats and the Story of the day:
81.25 miles
Calories 3719Completed in 7hours 6minutes
Average speed 13.5mph (1hour walking on sand didn't help!)
Elevation Gain 679 metres
Ah....Nice flat, empty road....looks like Dad's finally worked out the GPS.... |
Uh-oh...Spoke to soon???
Nope - definitely the passage to Paris!
If you're a cart horse!!!! Oh DAD......
It's not my fault I got a puncture....
Lunch in the woods outside Paris....Are you sure the camera is straight??
This is more like it - how will I know when I'm there??
What, just head for the tall pointy thing??
We're Here!!
All 8 Legs made it....
One very proud (and relieved) Dad...
Another proud (and relieved) Dad....
WELL DONE MAXI - YOU ARE AN ABSOLUTE SUPERSTAR!!

Day 4 - Unknown Territory....
Now the Day 4numbers and a moment of reflection....
It was a positively cool 31 degrees today (!) with less climbing than yesterday - consequently the boys were on fire!! By the lunch stop we had 8 legs again which was a bonus with the only low point of the day a WNF moment (close friends will know what that means!!) later in the evening!!
The stats for the day are:
76.08 miles
Calories 3458
Elevation Gain 1072 metres
Completed in 5hours 18 minutes 39 seconds
Average speed 14.4mph
We are now in totally unknown cycling territory...no one on this trip has cycled this far before - let's hope tomorrow is kind (fingers crossed for slightly overcast, tailwind, dry & around 18 degrees).
Something tells me I won't get my wish.
It is soul destroying to see your child gritting his teeth and creeping up hills out the saddle all the way in immense heat. It makes you feel equal parts sick & close to tears as well as guilty and humbled...
You question whether you are doing the right thing letting him do this...he is 11 years old. How much more character building does he need??....
Please, please donate and let him know that you get why he is doing this - it is so so important to him.
Thank you...
Jo
xx
Day 4 - And then there were three.....
Day 4 Depart...
Ok....so you may have noticed that we have only 6 legs this morning...Marcus is in a bad way and has really hurt his knee. We are all over the ice and elevation thing and he is hoping to join the guys this morning after about 20 miles.
Keep your fingers crossed people and send all good wishes and positive thoughts - as you can imagine his is gutted...
Max is still good...he ate well, slept well - which is more than I can say - all you cyclists out there...what does that Rego do to your insides?? #myhusbandstinks!!

Not much fun today... :-(((
Sorry for the radio silence today - dodgy wi-fi!!
The air was blue in the support car today....Some confusion on the route so we had what was a somewhat 'fraught' first stop, and early second stop due to over heating and a very quick last stop....
Just smile and say GPS boys....
Really tricky day - monster hot again and an extra 10 miles into the mix!!
The temp got to 35 degrees so we were a little worried about how Max would cope.
Have a look at the stats below, he is an absolute superstar....

8 Days to Go!!!!
Fantastic day cycling yesterday for Max - in spite of the heat he was FLYING!! Clearly inspired by a certain Mr Froome he took on his own mountain challenge of Ivinghoe Beacon and the Dunstable Downs! This time he remembered to keep well hydrated and use the suncream!!

Some of the children Joss Searchlight have been helping
MIKAYLA : age 6
Mikayla has been fighting cancer for 2 years. Her cancer has just started to spread again and she faces another traumatic year of chemotherapy. Ahead of the chemo we helped to fund a DisneyWorld Holiday for Mikalya and her 3 siblings. Her mum says "Thank you Joss Searchlight for helping create so many smiles".
CAMILLE : age 6
Camille has had 18 months of chemotherapy, she has suffered countless life threatening conditions including septic shock and renal failure. Camille is near deaf, has poor vision and struggles to walk. Camille's mum appealed to us "Camille has missed out on so much over past few years". Next month we are paying for Camille to go to Florida for her dream holiday. We've just sent Camille and siblings a huge box of Disney merchandise ready for their trip. Her mum says she has "Two very happy girls" .
MASON : age 8
Mason had a tough 20 months of chemotherapy and had to cope with lots of operations and procedures. After everything he has endured he deserves to have some magical treats. His dream wish is to swim with the dolphins so we have funded his accommodation in Florida to make this dream possible. His mum says "it's going to be amazing".
SOMETHING SPECIAL ART EVENT 2013
Our first Something Special Art Event was an amazing success. Over 120 artists and celebrities donated artworks and supported the event. With the help of some amazing supporters and guests we raised over £30,000 The funds raised from this art exhibition have allowed us to support many families and make dream wishes to come true. The most popular request is a holiday to DisneyWorld Florida and we are delighted to have been able to help fund holidays for 11 children. Something Special Video »
Joss Searchlight Needs you
We really need to raise awareness of our charity. In an ideal world we would like to have a presence at all major events in the Herts, Beds and Bucks area. Maybe a cake stall, a bring and buy, tom-bola or even just a stall handing out our leaflets.
We are in the process of having donation envelopes printed with lots of information about Joss Searchlight and how people can get involved, these will need distributing across the three counties. If you and maybe your friends could spare just a few hours every so often we would be very grateful.
Please contact Dianne on 01525 385800 or 07770 396809
