Who is Joss and why am I doing this?

Joss was a boy at my school who was in a lot of the same classes and sports teams as me. He walked a bit funny and found somethings a bit hard but underneath it all, he was just like the rest of my friends.
In September 2010 we went back to School after the summer holidays and Joss looked a lot more poorly than he had.....he needed a walker and didn't play sport anymore.
In January he had to go into hospital for an operation. I remember School telling us in Assembly that he had done really well and was a lot better. Then, when I got home, Mum sat me down and told me that Joss had died. I was really confused and thought she had got it wrong, I told Mum that school said he was going to be OK...I got quite upset and cried...I didn't understand how he just wouldn't be around anymore. It wasn't until after he died I was told he had a brain tumour..
Why I am doing this ride?.....Because my friend died, and I still miss him...and it's not fair...
Joss's Mum and Dad set up a charity in his name to help other people suffering with brain tumours and you can read all about Joss and the brilliant stuff they do to help at www.jossparkessearchlight.org.uk
Please follow my training progress and also the ride itself and show your support on Twitter @rideforjoss and on Facebook RideForJoss

Thank you so much to everyone who is donating on the Virgin Money Giving site at
'max wellstead's ride for joss'.

Every penny donated will make a real difference to the families of children suffering with brain tumours.

Your support and generosity means everything to Max....some of the hills on the route look very steep and knowing that everyone is behind him will make it so much easier...

Cycle heroes

There has been a lot of discussion in respect of the cycle hero I have suggested Max should look up to.
Of course high on his list should be his dad closely followed by either:
Lance Armstrong
Ian Stannard
Mark Cavendish
And/or Bradley Wiggins

However, there is a guy that many people will not have heard of, Tommy Godwin.

In 1939 Tommy rode 75,065 in one year to break a record that many now believe is unbreakable.

Max will be reading up on Tommys achievement of an average of 205miles each day for a year and I guess he'll be asking what the record is for a 10year old to ride in one year!

You can read more about Tommy Here:

Thank you to Diccon and Steve for their input with this blog entry.

Mountain bike race at MKBowl

As ever a great event! Fantastic support for rideforjoss. Thank you to everyone from TeamMk for their support. Love Max

Max's dads toolkit for the ride - message from Big Welly

This is the toolkit Purchased especially for the ride. It's a Lezyne Port-A-Shop from www.wiggle.co.uk . It gets delivered in an unmarked box so most blokes should get away with it! Any wives/girlfriends reading this should understand that it's very important to have the correct tools for the job! (and it's less than a pair of shoes (possibly?).

I know, but it's best to be prepared (and look how shiny the tools are!!!).

Thank you to everyone who've said they can join us for some of the ride, we've been overwhelmed with the response! Max is training at MK Bowl tonight and racing on Saturday with another big training ride planned for Sunday.

Love, Big Welly

The blog go's live!

My name is Max Wellstead, I am 10 years old and I live in Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire and I LOVE cycling...
On the last day of school I am cycling from Swanbourne to Cardiff…....and back - 250miles for my friend Joss.
Who is Joss and why am I doing this?
